Our existing operations stay safe and efficient through regular maintenance and improvements. For example, the Rhineland refinery complex in Germany needs to transfer products between two sites several kilometres apart and separated by the Rhine river. We are building a new pipeline beneath the river to connect the sites. This will improve the efficiency of operations, including the movement of products from one site to another. We worked closely with community members, local authorities and non-governmental organisations to route the pipeline to avoid an area rich in biodiversity (see opinion, under Environment). Construction is designed not to disrupt farming in the area and is expected to be completed in 2013.
